Spiritual Experience

One of my fascinations has been with the nature of spiritual experience. Almost universally throughout our species you find reports of various experiences that seem to be elusively beyond the realm of any of our modern sciences to explain, or even describe. Tales of travel beyond the limit of the body, visions of beings not of our world, apparitions from the future or past, sudden knowledge without ordinary learning, all these and more!

While a certain skepticism may root out some as hallucination, hysteria or hypnosis, I am willing to accept that there is some sort of experience that underlies these endlessly repeated events, and I will even attempt to state what I think are some fundamental "laws" that operate in this special arena of life.

  • The spiritual "world" does not have any predictable nature or quality
  • Spiritual experiences are personal and cannot be shared
  • Spiritual experience is unencumbered by the normally accepted dimensions of space and time
  • Explorations of the nature of the spiritual stubbornly refuse scientific investigation
  • Spiritual experiences are not doubted by the experiencer
