Obstructed View: Ruins
ruminations on recurring themes of decay and decrepitude

These are homemade CDR's, with printed discs, jewel cases and and pretty inserts to make them look oh-so-professional.

The "Demo" CD's have black and white artwork and are $10 each, the "Partial Ruins" disc is in full color, the only thing it lacks to appear totally "professional" is a bar code, and is $15.

Quality issues, if any, are listed in the individual CD descriptions.

This is the "latest" version of the album. As you probably know, no musician ever really thought of a record as "finished," and I feel the same way when I listen to these tracks - there is always something I want to fix, change or make better. A few of these things really should be done, but many of them would not be noticed by any other listener.

With the exception of "Trust," these were all tracked on my digital ADAT setup and mixed on my analog console to CDR, then tweaked in the digital domain to make the master. So they are all DAD, with "Trust" being AAD.

The only guest appearances that survive on these versions are Curt Bessette playing rhythm guitar on his Martin and Jim MacDougall playing the piano part on "I Stand Alone"

Originally recorded 12/27/01 directly to VHS stereo (audio only). While the quality, both technical and musical, is erratic, this recording serves as an interesting "milestone" of where song arrangements, lyrics, etc. were at before 2002's intensive work with Curt on making my songs more "polished," i.e., listenable.

Since this is not a multi-track recording, it consists only of my voice and one guitar.

Tidbits: Choices suffers from my having just written the "new" second chorus part, and you can hear me struggling to adjust to playing the C-G chorus rhythm two different ways. Jealousy was "sung" while holding a cigarette in my mouth, an experimental technique that will not be repeated.

This recording is anchored by a four track master I have of seven songs, which were pretty definitive of my "state of the art" when I made them. Recording quality on most of the tracks included is pretty high, and the musicianship isn't too bad, either.

The lead off track is the same one that closes CD 1, the mixed down version of Hunger, with that old style intro that I love so much. While this means you have to listen to the song twice in a row, this does not bother me too much!

The recordings of Lemonfishbutter and Exit Wound are pretty close to definitive, I think. The electric lead guitar on She Only Dances alters the whole experience of the song for me. The second acoustic (lead) guitar on Impressions also fills that song very nicely. The cricket on Exit Wound is classic!

While the first recording I ever made was after having bought a four track open reel machine, I also seem to have been lazy and recorded things here and there directly onto cassettes - using a crummy portable cassette machine, to make things worse.

This collection starts with that first recording, and proceeds through various versions of my earlier songs, culminating with simple acoustic and rather intense keyboard-based versions of Northern Eyes, and a cassette mix-down of Hunger with an intro I love. Too bad it's wrong for Hunger! What is also sad is that the multi-track master of that tape was erased. What is even sadder is that I don't even remember learning how to play keyboards....

Warning: This CD is of more archival than musical value. I would not recommend listening to it unless you are already familiar with my music and you want to see just how far I have come over the years.

I would also like to point out that She Only Dances is now known as Jealousy, and the song formerly known as Thirds has been named Exit Wound for quite some time now.

Soon I will set up a form that makes this really slick, but for now you'll have to settle for sending a note listing what you want, with your name and address, and payment in carelessly concealed cash, Enron stock certificates, or a check made out to "Huw Powell", to:

Don't forget to add a couple of dollars for postage. Orders outside the United States will cost more to ship. I suggest adding gold, diamonds or complete sets of fingerprints of exiled Nigerian royalty to allow for this.
