Running
lying on my pallet
lying sweating on the floor
lying apprehensive in the limb's crook
listening to night calls announcing my presence
running down a path
running wheezing in a pollen field
running and defensive taking random turns
breathing in nervous bursts I smell the salt
leaping a dried flood run
diving so I can live til tomorrow
swimming deep until all I see is red
coming to an island
crossing looking at a shallow bay
landing on the crest of a wave
feeling at last home, at last free
safe for another day
