Not So Clever

Sometimes they're with the cops
Some are privately retained
Sometimes they seem a bit lost
But in the end the perps are detained

Sometimes it's the young generation
With eyes on the silver plate
And sometimes their elders and betters
Have dreams of hoodwinking fate

Hercule Poirot says
And Miss Marple says
A long time ago Archimedes said:

"Just give me a fulcrum and a lever
And I'll show you who's not so clever"

Sometimes it's done with a poison
So subtle it should be discreet
Sometimes a bullet and gunshot
Directly across the street

And Miss Marple says
Lieutenant Columbo says
A long time ago Archimedes said:

"Just give me a fulcrum and a lever
And I'll show you who's not so clever"

There's always some downstair servant
Some innocent delivery clerk
To find or buy, build an alibi
From all the pieces that work

Lieutenant Columbo says
Even Sherlock Holmes says
A long time ago Archimedes said:

"Just give me a fulcrum and a lever
And I'll show you who's not so clever"

(instrumental fragment)

Some of them are jilted husbands
Sometimes their angry wives
But they won't have to split the estate
With only one of them left alive

And Sherlock Holmes says
Hercule Poirot says
A long time ago Archimedes said:

"Just give me a fulcrum and a lever
And I'll show you who's not so clever"
